Jahangir was the fourth Mughal Empire, he ruled effectively from 1605 AD until his death in 1627 AD. The meaning of the word ‘Jahangir’ is ‘Conqueror of the world’. His real name is Mirza Nur-ud-din Beig Mohammad Khan Salim. He took the title Jahangir after he sat on the Mughal throne.

On sitting on the throne, he gave the instruction that all of his gold and silver coins should have the couplet ‘Rui zar ra sakht Noorani barang mihr-o-mahr’ on one side and ‘Shah Nuruddin Jahangir ibn Akbar Badshah’ on another side of the coin. Meaning on this couplet is ‘May the face of money shine with the hue of the sun and the moon. Shah Nuruddin Jahangir, the son of Akbar Badshah’. This couplet was composed by Amir Ul Umra Sharif Khan. Later coins with ‘Kalima’ on one side and legend name ‘Nuruddin Muhammad Jahangir Badshah Ghazi’ on the other side were also issued.

This extremely rare gold Mohur with ‘Sakht Noorani’ couplet was sold for INR 17, 00,000 at Classical Numismatic Gallery. The Obverse of the coins is written as ‘Rui Zar Ra Sakht Noorani Barang Mihr-o-Mahr’ with the mint name Kabul at the bottom. And the reverse of the coin is inscribed as ‘Shah Nuriddin Jahangir ibn Akbar Badshah’.
