New €50 Note Enters Circulation in Ireland on 4th April

2017-04-24 Mon

A new €50 note with better security features entered circulation in Ireland and the eurozone on 4th April. Second-level security features can be identified only by professional cash handlers. Another set of special security features can be only recognised by Central Bank authorities.

The note features a portrait watermark of the Greek figure Europa; a portrait window, with a hologram of the same image which becomes transparent when held against light; raised lines along the side and raised print for visually impaired; the number 50 changes colour upon tiling from emerald green to deep blue.

Officials state that out of the €19bn notes in circulation across the eurozone, the number of counterfeit notes found is relatively very low. Old €50 notes will be circulated along with the new ones. Officials are hoping to get 50% of the old notes back, in a year’s time.
