Muhammad Azam Shah was the eldest son of the sixth Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. He was born in the year AD 1653 in the city of Burhanpur. He was appointed as ‘Heir-apparent’ in the year 1681 to his father. He seized the throne on Mughal Empire in the year AD 1707 after the death of his father Aurangzeb. But in the same year, he was defeated by his step brother Muhammad Mu’azzam in the battle of Jajau, who later sat on the Mughal throne by the title ‘Bahadur Shah I’.

Muhammad Shah ruled for a short period, hence the coins issued by him are rare. This silver rupee minted in Surat, of ‘Daulat wa Jam’ Couplet weighs around 11.4g. The obverse of the coin is inscribed as ‘Sikka zad dar Jahan Ba daulat-wa-jah Badshah mumalik azam shah’ and the reverse of the coin is inscribed as ‘julus -e-ashraf, sana ahad, zarb Surat’.

This very rare rupee was sold for INR 1, 00,000 at Rajgor’s Auction.
