On 3rd April, the sale of the 2017 Frederick Douglass National Historic Site 5-ounce silver bullion quarter dollar began. 12,000 coins made of 60,000 ounces of .999 fine silver were sold to authorised dealers. The coin has a maximum authorization of 150,000 including both bullion and Uncirculated versions. The exact number of the two versions released has not yet been revealed. The Uncirculated version with a post-strike finish depicts the P Mint mark while the bullion version does not carry the same.

The reverse depicts Frederick Douglass on a writing desk at his Washington, D.C. home. The obverse features a portrait of George Washington which was first used on State quarter dollar series of 1999 to 2008. John Flanagan's original portrait of Washington was used in the 1932 Washington quarter dollar which was based on a bust designed by French sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon.
