Tipu Sultan was born in the year 1750. He was named Tipu Sultan after a saint Tipu Mastan Aulia of Arcot. He is also known as Tiger of Mysore or Tipu Sahib. He was the eldest son of Sultan Hyder Ali of Mysore. He had introduced a number of Administrative innovations, including his coinage and new calendar system known as ’Mauludi year’.

He had also given a different name to all denominations that he had issued. All the gold and silver coins were named after the names of Muhammadan saints, Khilafas, and imams. And his copper coins had names of planets for eg:- ‘Paisa’ is also known as ‘Zohra’, ‘ Zohra’ is the Persian name of Planet ‘Venus’; ‘Half-Paisa’ is also known as ‘Behram’, ‘Behram’ is Persian name of Planet ‘Mars’, ‘Quarter-Paisa’ is also known as ‘Akhtar’, ‘Akhtar’ is the word for star.

This gold four Pagoda (Ahmadi) was sold for INR 5, 00,000 at Oswal Auction. The obverse of the coin is inscribed as ‘Muhammad Ahmad Din Dar Jahan Ast Raushan Ze Fatah Haider He Ahmadi Zarb Pattan Saal Sata Sanah 1218. And the reverse of the coin is inscribed as ‘Huwa As-Sultan Al-Waheed Al-Adil Tarikh-i-Julus Saal Sakh Seum Bahari; Sanah 8 Julisi.
