Mint of Mexico released the 2017 silver Libertad .999-fine bullion coins in several sizes and fractional issues. The coin has been minted since 1981 in gold and silver. It was also once offered as a platinum Proof coin.
The reverse features winged goddess Victoria of the Mexican Independence Victory Column with Popocatépetl and Iztaccihuatl volcanoes in the background. It also features the metal content and its purity. The Mexican National Coat of Arms is featured on the obverse with a Mexican eagle on a cactus holding a snake in its beak. Another inscription reads ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS meaning the Mexican United States. 10 smaller versions of the national seal are also shown.
Unlike other bullion coins, the Mexican Libertad does not carry a constant face value. It has a floating value that changes daily based on the market price of the metal. 1/20 ounce, 1/10 ounce, 1/4 ounce, 1/2 ounce, 1 ounce, 2 ounce and 5 ounce coins are available. The coins have a reeded edge.
