Introducing a major change in its 1 pound coin design, Royal Mint has given a fresh touch to the British coinage. This is the first major change to the £1 coin since it entered circulation in 1983. The new coin is 12-sided with a bimetallic composition and appearance.

The old round pound has undergone in its 33 years in circulation 24 designs changes created by eight different designers. The design for the new 12-sided £1 coin combines traditional floral emblems in a fresh and elegant way.
