Did you know that RBI has issued commemorative notes in India only once till date? Yes, that’s true! And it was to celebrate the 100th Birth anniversary of the father of our nation – Mahatma Gandhi.

It was in the year 1969 when special banknotes of denominations like 1 rupee, two rupees, five rupees, ten rupees and hundred rupees were issued. 2, 5, 10 and 100 rupees notes featured a picture of Gandhiji reading a book sitting on a podium in the exteriors with houses in the background. The one rupee note featured his side-faced portrait along with the year dates 1869 to 1969 marking his 100th birth anniversary.
