Red Dragon of Wales on Royal Mint Coins

The ‘Red Dragon of Wales’ design under the Queen’s Beasts coin series will feature on bullion coins issued by The Royal Mint in March.The series celebrates 10 traditional creatures that have been depicted on British royal heraldry from more than 100 years. The design reflects strength and courage of the beasts with a sense of movement to make them look bold and dynamic. The one ounce and quarter-ounce 999.9 fine gold coins, a two-ounce 999.9 fine silver coin will depict the Red Dragon design.
The mythical Dragons have been mentioned in legends all over the world. It is also mentioned in chronicles of Wales in the sixth century. It was an emblem of Owen Tudor from Welsh heritage. The troops of Henry VII carried a fiery red dragon standard at the Battle of Bosworth.
The red dragon has a yellow underbelly. It holds a red and gold shield with leopards, the arms of Llewelyn ap Griffith, the last native Prince of Wales. Even though the dragon is a scary creature, it is considered to be strong, wise and powerful.
