Commemorative medals celebrating the 40th anniversary of Gasparro’s 1977 Flowing Hair Liberty dollar designs were released by Grove Minting Co. US Mint Chief Engraver Frank Gasparro created a design for a dollar coin in the 1970s, but it lost out against the image of Susan B. Anthony. The commemorative medal has an 11-sided rim perimeter. The reverse features the Eagle in Flight with outstretched wings, looking up, with 13 stars, 10 rays, along with the Grove Minting coat of arms. The original image is at Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History.
Gasparro designed the medal for the American Numismatic Association’s 1969 convention using a Flowing Hair design. Galvanos expected an 11-sided and the trial strikings were made at the Philadelphia Mint, but all were destroyed very soon.
