1793 Liberty Cap cent Sold for $199K

Early large cents were a highlight at the Ira and Larry Goldberg’s pre-Long Beach auction on 12th February. 150 large cents by Haig Koshkarian, mentioned in A Guide Book of United States Coins or “Red Book” were offered.The 1793 Liberty Cap cent, belonging to the Koshkarian Collection, graded Extremely Fine 45 was sold for $199,750. Three types of large cents were struck in 1793: the Flowing Hair, Chain; the Flowing Hair, Wreath; and the Liberty Cap, Wreath.
There was a bisecting die crack on the obverse and the coin belonged to a late die state. It had a glossy medium to dark chocolate brown and steel with lighter brown toning. The surfaces were extremely smooth.
