Bahamani Sultanate Nizam Al-Din Ahmad Shah’s III Coins

Nizam Al-Din Ahmad Shah III (AH 866-867; AD 1461-1463) was sultan of Bahamani Sultanate. Bahamani Sultanate was a Muslim state of Deccan in Soutn India; it was one of the great medieval Indian kingdoms. Bahamani Kingdom was founded by Turkish general Ala-ud-din Bahman Shah in the year 1347 by revolting against the Delhi Sultanate Muhammad bin Tughluq, The revolt was successful and he became the first Muslim ruler of Deccan.

Nizam Al Din Ahmad Shah III issued coins on gold and copper. Gold coins issued by him are extremely rare. Copper coins issued by him are of four types, all with different Arabic legends. The legends of his copper coins are:-

I) ‘Al- Mutansir Bi-Nasr Allah Al-Qawl Al-Ghani’ meaning ‘He who seeks aid from the support of God, the strong, the rich’.
II) ‘Al- Raji Bi-ta ‘yid Al-Rahman’ meaning ‘He who hopes for the support of the Merciful One’.
III) ‘Al-Muti ‘Al-Mannan Bi-Amr Allah’ meaning ‘He who is obedient and beneficent by God’s Command’.
IV) ‘Al-Wathiq Al-Rahman’ meaning ‘He who confides in God, the merciful’.
His gold tanka was, minted in Hadrat Muhammadabad, which weighs around 11g, was listed for INR 1, 40,000 – 1, 60,000 at Todywalla Auction. The obverse of the coin reads as ‘Ahmad Shah Bin Humayu Shah Al-Sultan Al-Bahmani Khallada Allah Mulkahu’ within square; date 867 and mint name written in margin and the reverse of the coin reads as ‘Al-Wathiq Billah Abu’l Muzaffar Nizam Al-Dunya Wa’l Din.
