Rare German Colony Stamp To Be Auctioned

2017-02-22 Wed

Auction Galleries Hamburg will be offering a used example of one of the only 7 issued overprinted 2-mark blue German colonies stamps on 3rd and 4th March. The stamp is valued at €24,000 and features a circular 13th February 1915 postmark from the coastal town of Anecho. Bidding will start from €20,000.

After being a German protectorate since 1884, Togo came under military rule by British forces in the western region and French forces in the east during the hostilities.

The popular 1900 Togo stamps showing the kaiser’s yacht, SMY Hohenzollern II, were overprinted by both France and England. In 1914, the French stamps had a serif-type overprint, but in 1915, a few provisionals were overprinted with a sans-serif type.

The stamp offered at the auction was glued on a cover sent by the German postmaster of Togo to a friend in Freiburg, Germany and features a BPA photo certificate.
