Chola dynasty is a famous South Indian dynasty which ruled for the longest period of time. This dynasty originated in the fertile land of the Kaveri River Uraiyur, now Tiruchchirapalli was the ancient capital of the Chola Dynasty.Raja Raja Chola I was a renowned king who ruled over the Chola kingdom of southern India between 985 and 1014 CE. During his reign, the Cholas expanded beyond South India with their domains stretching from Sri Lanka in the south to Kalinga in the north. Raja Raja Chola also launched several naval campaigns that resulted in the capture of the Malabar Coast as well as the Maldives and Sri Lanka.
He issued many coins in gold and silver coins during his reign. The given coin in the picture is issued by Raja Raja I in a base Gold Kahavanu weighing around 4.41g. The obverse of the coin has a king seated right, arm on right raised and holding conch-shell with in dotted circle. The reverse of the coin bears a standing king facing right with torch and plant symbols at the sides.
