Created by Hiroshi Fujimoto and Motoo Abiko, Doraemon was a comic manga now appearing as an anime series. In December 1969 the series first appeared simultaneously in six different children’s magazines. Around 4500 gadgets have been created making it popular even among adults.

The story follows the life of Nobita Nobi, a 5th standard student who is always bullied by his friends Jiian or Takeshi Goda (a bully), Honekawa Tsuneo (a cunning, gloating and spoiled wealthy brat). The other main character is Shizuka Minamoto (the girl Nobita loves). His great-great grandson Sewashi from the 22nd century sends Doraemon, a cat robot, back in past to alter Nobita’s life for good and help avoid the misfortunes that would fall on generations of Nobi because of Nobita.

Born on 3th December, 2112, Doraemon is a blue cat robot who has a four-dimensional pocket with many futuristic gadgets in it. He appears out of Nobita’s drawer with the help of a time machine. He originally had yellow ears that were later eaten by a rat leaving him earless and with a phobia of rats that lasted the entire series.

The story usually follows Nobita coming home crying about a problem he faced in school and asking Doaremon for help. Though Doraemon asks him to stand up for himself, Nobita always manages to convince Doraemon to give him a gadget that would help him take revenge. Eventually Nobita always manages to fall in greater trouble because of the gadget leading to a funny turn of events always ending with great moral values.

The secondary characters in the series are Nobita’s parents, Degisuki, his teacher, his future descendents and Dorami (Doraemon’s little sister).

This 80 Japanese Yen commemorative stamp of Doraemon was issued by Japan Post on 4th June, 2013. The stamp shows Nobita and Doraemon flying using the ‘bamboo-copter’, a futuristic gadget that helps to fly.
