€1.3m Worth Old Irish Punts Exchanged in 2016

€1.3 million worth old Irish currency notes were exchanged by the public last year. These notes were withdrawn from circulation on 9th February 2002. Irish banknotes and coins can still be exchanged for euro at the Central Bank.Apart from banknotes, €194,000 worth of old Irish coins were also exchanged for euro in 2016. These are the lowest exchange amounts made since six years. It has been almost 15 years since these currencies were withdrawn but as per official reports, €227,125,638.68 of old banknotes and €123,741,177.34 in old coins are yet to be exchanged.
There was no time period set for getting the old currencies exchanged. They can be submitted at the Central Bank of Ireland in Dublin by post or by using a drop-box facility. Up to IR£3,000 can be exchanged per transaction. The old currencies will be first verified and reimbursed in euro through electronic transfer to the customer’s bank account.
