Birth Anniversary of Paul Cezanne

2017-01-19 Thu

Paul Cezanne, a preeminent painter of the Post-Impressionist era, was born on 19tH January 1839, in the Aix-en-Provence of France. Known as the "Master of Aix", Cezanne is credited with introducing the emergence of twentieth-century modernism or abstract art.

Cezanne’s work laid the foundations of the transition from the 19th-century conception of artistic endeavour to a new and radically different world of art in the 20th century. The mastery of design, tone, composition and colour that spanned his entire life's work is highly characteristic with exploratory brushstrokes and is recognizable around the world. Both Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso were greatly influenced by Cézanne, to such an extent that they have remarked Cezanne to be “the Father of all of us”.

Most of Cezanne’s paintings gave the most accurate representation of very realistic and genuine observations of the actual world. His strong methodical brushstrokes created magic on canvas and it was as though he were "constructing" a picture rather than "painting" it!

Cezanne’s paintings, which showed "a harmony parallel to nature”, are so beautiful that many countries have issued stamps commemorating such masterpieces. Countries like France, Republic of Togo, Maldives, Guinée-Bissau, Solomon islands, Central African Republic, etc have issued souvenir sheets, stamps and miniature sheet in honour of this extraordinary painter!

A 100 French Francs banknote from 1997 also depicts the painter and one of his celebrated painting on its obverse and reverse.

Well...you may not be able to afford one of Cezanne’s painting, but you can definitely collect and be a proud owner of these beautiful stamps and notes!
