Solidarity through Love – New Maltese Coin

The first circulating commemorative €2 coin from Malta under the series “From Children in Solidarity” celebrates the theme “Solidarity through Love.” The coin is designed by a student.The Central Bank of Malta, the Ministry for Education and Employment and the Malta Community Chest Fund are working together on this project. The Malta Community Chest Fund undertakes many initiatives for helping people with various needs.
A nationwide design contest among secondary schoolchildren was conducted to create the designs. Five finalists were selected, out of which the winner’s design is featured on the coin.
Sarah Cilia created the obverse design depicting two hands forming a heart shape like a Maltese flag. A representation of human bodies encircles the left and the right wrists. Other inscriptions include MALTA 2016.
The reverse features the common European map design with the 12 stars on both sides. The mintage limit of the ringed bimetallic 8.5 grams €2 coin is 380,000 which will be released in November.
