The project is initiated by the Central Bank of Malta, the Ministry for Education and Employment, and the Malta Community Chest Fund which undertakes various activities for helping people with various needs. The program was officially launched on 5th June 2015. The designs were to be selected through the outcome of a coin design competition organised for all secondary school students. Five designs were selected after which a voting process took place. All secondary school students participated in the voting exercise and the idea of responsible citizenship was introduced to them from an early age.
The obverse features two hands forming a heart shape representing the Maltese flag. The winning design was created by Ms. Sarah Cilia, a secondary school student. The reverse features the common €2 design.
Rolls of 25 coins and coin cards will be available in circulation quality. The roll of 25 coins is priced at €70 and the coin card can be purchased for €7. The profits from the sale of the coin cards will be donated to the Malta Community Chest Fund Foundation.
