2017 Native American $1 Dollar Design Revealed

The reverse design of the 2017 Native American dollar was revealed officially by the US Mint. Designed by Chris Costello and sculpted by Charles L. Vickers, the design features the Sequoyah writing “Sequoyah from Cherokee Nation” in syllabary on the sides. Other inscriptions include “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “$1,” and “Sequoyah”.Sequoyah was a silversmith who invented the script for Cherokee language. The design was selected over 13 other candidates.
The Native American $1 Coin Program honours the contributions of Indian tribes and individual Native Americans towards the history and development of the country. The reverse design of coins issued in this series changes annually.
The obverse depicts a portrait of "Sacagawea" as designed by sculptor Glenna Goodacre. Other inscriptions include LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST. An edge inscription features the year, mint mark, and E PLURIBUS UNUM.
