82,500 ATMs Recalibrated for New 500 and 2000 Rupees Notes

2016-11-23 Wed

82,500 ATMs out of 2.2 lakh ATMs are now recalibrated to dispense new high-security currency notes of 500 and 2,000 rupees. Officials said that the recalibration tries to maintain regional balance and give more priority to rural areas. ATMs can now contain 50-60 lakh cash to meet the higher demand, due to which queues are getting smaller.

Before recalibration, only 100 rupees notes were available at ATMs restricting the maximum limit to Rs. 5 Lakh. After a special task force was created, RBI, banks and cash logistic companies have been working smoothly so that cash is dispensed to the needy at a faster rate. Many ATMs are also working round to clock so that the demand is met. 12,000 to 14,000 ATMs are getting recalibrated every day. The target is to complete all the recalibration process by the end of this month.
