The 50th anniversary of the world’s first modern gold bullion coin, the South African gold Krugerrand, will be celebrated by the country in 2017 with the release of a special Premium Uncirculated version. The Krugerrand is the most popular bullion coin in the world and also the most traded coin in history. It inspired many other modern bullion coins in 1967.Innovative laser-etching technology which was unavailable in 1967 will be used to digitally enhance the dies of the 2017 Krugerrand silver 1-rand coin. This would add to the crisp detailing and shading that was never seen on a Krugerrand coin before. The obverse of the 1-ounce .999 fine silver 1-rand coin features the Paul Kruger portrait and the reverse will depict the springbok along with a special 50th-anniversary logo.
The mintage limit of this 31.107-gram coin is 1 million pieces. Proof and standard bullion issues will also be officially revealed at the World Money Fair in Berlin in February.
