Rare Auction Catalogue Auctioned for $2,900

On 21st October, Kolbe and Fanning’s online auction sold a key Thomas Elder 1911 auction catalogue of the Woodin Collection housed in a later leather clamshell box for $2,937.50.

An 1884 German auction catalogue featuring the first known photograph of the Dexter 1804 Draped Bust dollar was sold for $4,700. .

Producing coin auction catalogues with photographic plates was a costly affair in those times. It is an extremely rare auction book with photographic plates made by Edgar Adams, a famous American numismatic researcher and photographer of the early twentieth century. .

Out of the 20 copies that were produced, 6 have been auctioned in 25 years. Woodin put together one of the finest collections of U.S. coins ever assembled including the unique 1870-S Indian Head gold $3 piece. .

The catalogue was at the library of Armand Champa who paid $2,000 for it on 10th September 1981 from dealer Frank Katen.
