The portrait of the longest reigning monarch and the sovereign of Canada, Queen Elizabeth II appears on all standard Canadian coins and one banknote, the $20 bill.

As per a recent survey, more than half of Canadian adults do not want Elizabeth's heir Prince Charles as head of state after the reign of the Queen. .

But a central bank staff working on the 2012 $20 bill wrote that depicting the reigning monarch was "a matter of tradition”. If the reigning monarch dies before the notes are issued then a decision will have to be taken as to whether the tradition must be continued. It would add to the costs if the design would have to be changed. .

Canadian government though has plans to feature a Canadian woman on an upcoming banknote in the 2018 series and other changes are not being considered at the moment.
