Square Gold Tanka of a Sultan brings INR 1, 75,000

Qutb Al-Din Mubarak (AH 712-720, AD 1316-1320) ruled for four years, during these four years of reign he issued a variety of denominations in his square and round coins. The coins also have many titles inscribed on them, which are ‘Al-imam Al-azam’ meaning the most high imam; ‘Khalifa rabb Al-alamin’ meaning The Caliph, lord of two worlds; and ‘Sikandar al-zaman’ meaning The Alexander of the age.The early coins of Qutb Al-Din Mubarak were in round shape, which were later replaced by square shaped coins.
The legend in this coin is split on both sides of the coin. The obverse of the coin reads “ Al-imam Al-azam Khilafa rabb Al-alamin qutb Al-duniya wa Al-din abul muzaffar Mubarakshah” The word ‘Mubarak shah in written on the left side of last line.
Reverse side of the coin reads as “Al-Sultan ibn Al-Sultan Al-Wathiq billah amir al-mu’minin within the square; mint name Hadrat Al Khila and date 719 written in words in margins.
This coin of extremely fine condition was sold at the hammer price of INR 1, 75, 000 at Todywalla Auctions, held at Mumbai on 22 April 2016.
