Italy issued the latest coin belonging to the “Italy of Art” series on 6th September celebrating the town of Recanati, located in the Province of Macerata.

Recanati was founded in the middle of the 12th century and its name possibly originated from the ruins of an ancient Roman town Ricina. The city is known for the Renaissance and Baroque palaces along with religious architecture. It was also the hometown of one of the most noted Italian poets Count Giacomo Leopardi as well.

The obverse of the silver coin features the facade of the church St. Augustine along with the cloister, and the bell tower. Leopardi’s poem “Passero Solitario” (“The Lonely Sparrow”) mentions this beautiful church. Other inscriptions include the municipal coat of arms, a lion rampant along with the texts REPUBBLICA ITALIANA and 2016.

The reverse features Lorenzo Lotto’s painting The Annunciation, which is now displayed at the Museo Civico Villa Colloredo Mels of Recanati. Other inscriptions include ITALIA DELLE ARTI, the name of the town, the denomination and the mintmark R for Mint of Rome.

The mintage limit of this 5 Euro .925 silver 18 g. Proof coin is 4,000 pieces. The series began in 2010 and an additional €10 silver coin was also issued on the 23rd September to celebrate the region of Sardinia.
