2018-09-21 Fri

Also known as World Peace Day, this day is observed annually on 21st September. The International Day of Peace is dedicated to world peace, specifically the absence of war and violence.

A UN resolution established the International Day of Peace in 1981 to coincide with the opening of the UN General Assembly. The first Peace Day was celebrated in 1982. Until 2002, it was decided to be held on the third Tuesday of September each year. However, later on, September 21 became the permanent date for the International Day of Peace.

By creating the International Day of Peace, the UN devoted itself to worldwide peace and encouraged people to work in cooperation for this goal. The Secretary-General celebrates the Day in the Peace Garden at United Nations Headquarters by ringing the Peace Bell and observing a minute of silence.

People around the world take part in various activities and organize events cantered on the theme “peace”. The Day’s theme for 2018 is “The Right to Peace - The Universal Declaration of Human Rights at 70”. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals were unanimously adopted by the 193 Member States of the United Nations.

Other than every year’s celebration, this day is marked with different philatelic releases. In case of India, a Rs.5.00 stamp was issued in the year of 2005. The stamp depicts a beautiful idea of international harmony. A flower with petals of flags is shown being nurtured by children of different races.
