2016-09-20 Tue
The fourth Canadian coin of the Landscape Illusions five-coin series celebrates the Pronghorn Antelope, a North American mammal mostly found in Saskatchewan. The series highlights Canada’s natural heritage with the portrayal of Canadian landscape combining natural elements to create the optical illusion of an animal. The Pronghorn’s depiction on the reverse is cleverly hidden between wheat fields. Only when one looks at the design carefully, that the animal can be identified.
Each "horn" of the pronghorn is made of a flattened blade of bone that grows from the skull and develops into a keratinous sheath which is shed and re-grown annually. The horns are branched, each sheath possessing a forward-pointing tine giving the name to the animal - pronghorn.
The obverse features the common portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The mintage limit of this 20 Dollars .999 Silver 31.3 Grams Proof & Coloured coin is 5,500. The last coin in the series will feature the Snowy Owl and will be released in November 2016.
