Star Banknote Set Sold at the 2016 Long Beach Heritage Auctions World Currency Sale
2016-09-19 Mon
The Heritage Auctions organised a world currency auction at the Currency Expo Long Beach, California from 8th September to 12th September. 1,890 lots were offered for sale, which included banknotes from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe. One of the highlights during the auction was the first decimal issue of the Bahamas which was issued in 1965 in various About Uncirculated and Uncirculated grades, all with the matching serial number A000009. Three of these rare sets were up for sale at the auction.
Currently, it is extremely difficult to put together a set like this one. The lower denominations are sometimes found in higher grades but the $50 and $100 denominations are rare to be found in Uncirculated grades or even in circulated condition.
The set is low-serial-numbered, which is why the notes belonging to it are available in Uncirculated condition. The notes that were issued from 1968 to 1974 are much more difficult to be found in high grades even though they are issued more recently. All of them were sold to separate buyers except for the $50, which remained unsold. The $100 note was sold for the opening bid of $15,000.
