A metal detector named Ian Greig recently found a rare 1,400 years old Anglo-Saxon gold shilling near Fulford, York. Experts believe that the coin is only one of the 19 such coins ever found and is worth between £5,000 and £7,000.

Gerig did not know about the coin’s historical significance until he emailed the pictures of the coin across to his friends.

The coin is smaller than a five pence piece but is "one-in-a-million" find. The coin features a human figure holding two crosses on one side possibly representing Paulinus, the first Bishop of York.

Mr. Greig would rather want the coin to be on public display than offering it to a private collector and is discussing the idea’s fruitfulness with Yorkshire Museum.
