Have you noticed that most of the coins around the world are round in shape! Maybe that’s because it is easy to handle them than the square coins or any other shape and also because they are less prone to erosion.

But the rulers of ancient India played with different shapes, sizes, weights, and denominations, in gold, silver, brass and other metals.

A very unique ‘U’ shaped Gold Fanam coin was minted by Chalukyas of Kalyan. It weighs around 0.52g and has three punches on its obverse side with a lion motif on the apex, Kannada letter Ya on the left arm and Kannada letter Shri with elephant goad on the right arm.

The Silahara was another dynasty in India which is famous for its ‘ U’ shaped coin.

The shape of the coin makes a coin very rare and unique in its own way, which also raises the price of the coin.
