2016-09-02 Fri
A day that celebrates the “Kalpavruksha”, the Coconut Tree, is celebrated worldwide on 2nd September. This day has been declared as World Coconut Day by the Asian and Pacific Coconut Community (APCC) which has its headquarters at Jakarta, Indonesia. The APCC is an inter-governmental organisation of 18- member nations who are major coconut growing countries.
The World Coconut Day aims to create awareness about the importance of coconut and its potential in eradicating poverty and promoting the development in its member countries.
The coconut also holds an auspicious and a very important role in the religious and the cultural life of Indians. The “Shrifal” is offered not only to the gods in religious rituals but it also exchanges hands during important social functions such as marriage or naming ceremony.
As a primal symbol of creation, the coconut is truly a symbolism of selfless sacrifice. Rightly called as the “Tree of life”, every part of the coconut tree can be used. The coconut is also imbued with medicinal qualities. Being an eco-friendly crop it facilitates sustainable development.
This day is to create awareness about the benefits of this “Tree of abundance”!
India Post in 1976 issued an INR 0.25 stamp to commemorate 60 years of Coconut Research in India.
