First Commemorative Coin of Mexico
2016-08-30 Tue
Caballito silver pesos which celebrated the Mexican Revolution, circulated from 1910 to 1914, are the first Mexican commemorative coins.Caballito means “little horse” in Spanish and is one of Mexico’s most beautiful coins. The obverse features an eagle, while the reverse depicts Liberty on a horse, holding an oak branch and torch with a rising sun in the background.
Liberty does not use reins to control the horse which is ready to race forward. She looks behind as the horse moves forward. Horses in those days were an integral part of the nation’s economy. The horse represents vigour, energy and control, which reflected the heartbeat of the nation in those days. A radiant rising sun appears behind the horse emitting 14 rays of light into the sky.
Experts state that the coin design represents artistry and immense beauty.
