Canada Remembers Battle of Somme on the Latest $20 Silver Coin

The 1916 Battle of Somme is remembered on the third Proof .9999 fine silver $20 coin of the First World War Battlefront series. The battle was considered one of the deadliest World War I battles.It began on 1st July and went on till to 18th November, 1916. It was known for the fierce trench warfare. Canadian soldiers showcased exemplary valour and sacrificed their lives without thinking twice for the nation.
The reverse depicts a soldier’s point of view in battle during the Somme Offensive of 1916. A Canadian battalion constantly attacks with artillery fire over the trenches using rifles mounted with bayonets, as the soldiers march towards enemy line. A sergeant encourages his men forward and a young Canadian soldier looks on. The obverse features a gold-plated effigy of King George V.
Like the Victory Medal that was awarded to the allied soldiers of World War I, the winged figure of Victory is selectively gold-plated.
The coins can be purchased for 109.95 Canadian dollars and the mintage is limited to 10,000.
