Khajuraho is an ancient city situated in the Chhatarpur district of Madhya Pradesh, renowned for its magnificent temples and intricate sculptures. Established between 885 CE and 1000 CE by the Chandela dynasty, the Khajuraho Group of Monuments is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, celebrated for its Nagara-style architecture and exceptional artistic detail. The sculptures found in Khajuraho are especially notable for their intricate craftsmanship and representational depth, with a significant emphasis on the depiction of women. Silpa Prakasa, a medieval Orissan Sanskrit text on temple architecture from the 10th century, provides detailed guidance for sculptors on the representation of the 16 types of women and the methods of their carving. Among the remarkable works is the sculpture entitled 'Woman Writing a Letter,' originally from the Lakshmana Temple, a 10th-century Hindu temple erected by Yashovarman of the Chandela dynasty in Khajuraho. This sandstone sculpture is currently housed in the Indian museum, Kolkata (West Bengal).
On July 1, 1966, India Post commemorated this masterpiece of medieval Indian art by issuing a definitive stamp with a face value of Rs 1. This stamp also highlights the value and prevalence of education and communication.
