The 150th anniversary of the confederation of Canada will be celebrated by the Royal Canadian Mint and Canadian Geographic by releasing a 13-coin series celebrating the diversity and beauty of Canada. Each coin would feature a photo from the magazine in colour. The coins would highlight the Canadian wildlife or an important landmark from the 10 different provinces of the country.

The first 10 dollar coin made of 15.8 grams of .999 silver is dedicated to the province of Ontario and the reverse side on the Canadian dollar coin which features the common loon from the Northeast province. A 1987 Canadian coin depicted this bird which is why the coin is called “loonie”.

The coloured depiction makes the design look more realistic just like the original photograph with the checker plumage and the black-and-white collar under its jet-black head. Other inscriptions include ‘CANADA’ and ‘1867-2017’.

The mintage of the coin is limited to 25,000 pieces The remaining coins would be issued on a monthly basis.
