In 1680, Abdul Kauf Khan became the first Nawab of Savanur, receiving the jagir of Bankapur, Toragal, and Azamnagar from Aurangzeb. In 1730, the Nawab of Savanur, an ally of the Nizam, was granted additional territory. However, he only held this land briefly. Following the Maratha expedition into southern Maratha territory between 1746 and 1747, the Nawab was forced to cede several regions, including the talukas of Bagalkot, Badami, Padshahpur, and Dambul, along with various other tracts of land.
He was allowed to retain Mishrikot, Hubli, Bankapur, and Hangal, as well as the forts of Toragal and Azamnagar. By 1756, all these places had been ceded to the Peshwa.
Toragal remained under Maratha's control and served as the chief town of a sarkar until 1818 when the district came under British rule.
