German medallic artist Karl Goetz is known for his satirical artwork. One of his works would be sold at the Presidential Coin & Antique Co.’s auction that would end on 29th August. The medal celebrates a significant news event of 1933.Experts believe that Medals of Karl Goetz were inspired from newspaper articles. Adolf Hitler was nominated as chancellor by President Paul von Hindenburg on 30th January, 1933 and Goetz created a medal inspired by this news. The “With Hindenburg For Germany” medal was one such example.
The obverse features the portraits of Hindenburg, Hitler and Von Papen with their names. The reverse displays a German soldier slaying a dragon holding a shield with an inscription which translates to “National Front”.
Goetz submitted this medal to the Brown House, the Nazi Party headquarters for approval. The design was not passed as the reverse did not bear a swastika and Goetz wasn’t a party member. A swastika was added on the shield and the design was approved for making medals.
The medal without the swastika design has an estimate of $1,750+.
