1880 Austrian Medal Made from Melted Ancient Coins

In 1880, the 10th anniversary of the Austrian Numismatic Society was celebrated with the release of commemorative medals struck on metal made by melting ancient bronze coins.One of these medals was sold for $207 at the Classical Numismatic Group’s e-auction which ended on 13th July.
The obverse of the medal, designed by Anton Scharff depicts Austrian Jesuit priest and numismatist, Joseph Hilarius Eckhel.
The reverse features an inscription that marks the 10th anniversary; an Athens-style owl, olive branches and a text that translates to “melted ancient coins provided the bronze.”
The medal was once part of the RBW Collection and is graded Extremely Fine with brown surfaces.
