Before Mughals took control of Nashik and named it Gulshanabad, the region remained under various rulers in medieval period. The Maratha Confederacy brought it under their control in the Fasli year 1161 (1751-52).

The Maratha Confederacy issued this silver rupee (11.33g) in the name of Mughal Emperor Shah Alam II. The obverse is inscribed with the name and title of Shah Alam II and the reverse is inscribed with the mint name Gulshanabad and a sun, a bow and arrow, and an ornate leaf symbol as a mint mark.
