Chandor lies approximately 64 kilometres northeast of Nasik. In the 14th century, it was part of the Bahmani kingdom and later became part of the Ahmadnagar Sultanate. During the 16th century, it came under the control of the Mughals but was later captured by the Marathas. In 1635, the Mughals once again seized Chandor, but the fearless Marathas took it back. Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb recaptured it and renamed it Jaffarabad. Ahmad Shah Bahadur, another Mughal Emperor, granted the swardeshmukhi of Chandor to Malhar Rao Holkar. During the Second Maratha War, it was captured by the British East India Company in 1804 but was later returned to Holkar, who held it until 1818.
