Rare Shivaji-Era Silver Rupee Fetches Rs. 10.5 Lakh

Nanyadarshini 2016 saw the auction of a rare silver rupee coin minted for the coronation of Shivaji Maharaj. This coin was minted in 1674 CE along with gold hon to commemorate crowning Shivaji as the ruler of the Maratha Empire. It realised an amount of Rs. 10.5 lakh in the auction conducted at the event in Bengaluru.The coin, previously owned by a Pune-based businessman, was bought by an anonymous bidder during the auction held by Marudhar Arts. There are less than 10 of these coins in existence today with private collectors as well as museums. It was previously auctioned in January this year.
The silver rupee coins do not bear the date of issue. "Jagadamba Prasanna" can be seen on one side of the coin, while the other reads "Raja Shiv Chhatrapati".
