Gold Tanka of Damghan Shah of Madhurai Sultanate

Madurai Sultanate was the short-lived Independent Muslim Sultanate located in the city of Madurai, in Tamil Nadu, during the medieval period in India. Nasir-ud-Din Mahmud Damghan Shah ruled Madurai Sultanate between 1344 and 1347 CE. He sat on the throne of Madurai after the death of Ghiyath-ud-Din Muhammad Damghan.The above gold tanka issued by Damghan shah during his rule weighs around 11.07g. The obverse side of this gold mohur is inscribed as 'Al Sultan Al A’zam Ghiyath Al Dunya Wa’l Din Abu’l Muzaffar Muhammad Damghan Shah Al-Sultan'. The reverse side of this gold tanka is inscribed as 'Sikandar Al Thani Yamin Al Khilafa Nasir amir', mint name & date in margin. This gold tanka is listed for INR 70,000 in an upcoming auction of Oswal Antiques, which will be held in Kolkata on December 24, 2022.
