Belgium Celebrates Olympics on Coins

Belgium has issued special 10 Euro silver non-circulating proof coins to motivate the spirits of the athletes who are participating in the 2016 RIO Olympics this year in Brazil. 98 Belgian athletes are participating in 17 different sports, including archery, sailing, and swimming.The obverse features three faceless human figures with their arms stretched upwards. A track, baseball court, or other hard sporting surface is depicted in the background. Belgium Olympic Committee’s (BOC) logo is also portrayed and a faceless human figure is holding the national flag without distinctive patterns. The official Olympic logo with the five rings is also featured on the obverse. Other inscriptions include ‘TEAM BELGIUM’ and year of issue, 2016.
The reverse features a map of EU member states with two vertical lines resembling latitude and longitude. The inscription reads BELGI/QUE/E/EN, with the three alternate suffixes which denote the nation’s name translated in French, Dutch, and German. Other inscriptions include 10 EURO, 2016, the Royal Mint of Belgium mintmark, patron saint of Brussels, with a cross atop his head, a tiny cat as the mint’s privy mark and the letters LL, initials for Luc Luycx who is the designer.
