On July 1st, which is also known as Canada day, the Royal Canadian Mint issued five million commemorative coins to motivate all the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic athletes participating in the 2016 Rio Summer Games. The coin was revealed at the Canadian Olympic Beach Party held at Toronto’s Woodbine Beach.

During the 2002 Olympic Winter Games, that was held in Salt Lake City, a “Loonie” or one dollar coin was buried at centre ice to bring in good luck for the athletes. The coin worked wonders as both the men’s and women’s ice hockey teams won gold medals. The tradition of issuing these special “Lucky Loonie” coins continued ever since then. Each member of the Canadian Olympic team would receive this coin. .

The reverse features a loon on the water with outstretched wings, a maple leaf and the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Team logos. The obverse features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. .
