Today, 12th December in 1901 the world’s first ever wireless message was sent!

An Italian physicist and radio pioneer Guglielmo Marconi succeeded in sending the first radio transmission across the Atlantic Ocean, disproving all the detractors who told him that the curvature of the earth would limit transmission to 200 miles or less.

A simple Morse-code signal for the letter “s” was transmitted from Poldhu in Cornwall, England to St. John’s Newfoundland, Canada. This message travelled more than 2,000 miles!

Many countries have commemorated this revolutionary invention of radio and its first successful long distance transmission on stamps.

India has issued a Rs.2 stamp of Guglielmo Marconi.
