William Henry Bragg was a pioneer British scientist in solid-state physics who was a joint winner (with his son Sir Lawrence Bragg) of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1915 for their services in the analysis of crystal structure by the means of X-rays.

William was born on July 2, 1862, at Westward, Cumberland to Robert John Bragg, a merchant marine officer, and farmer, and his wife Mary nee Wood, a clergyman's daughter. He was educated at Market Harborough Grammar School and afterwards at King William’s College, Isle of Man. At the age of 23, Bragg was appointed (Sir Thomas) Elder Professor of Mathematics and Experimental Physics at the University of Adelaide, Australia.

He was knighted in 1920. To honour him, The Postal Department of the Republic of the Congo has issued a 325 Congolese franc commemorative postage stamp in 2002.
