A rare 100 Rupees banknote of Zanzibar Region has been presented in Spink Auction held on 28th April 2021. The banknote was fetched the prize of 90,000 GBP or 125,833 USD. The note has never before appeared at auction, and ranks as the rarest in a series of notes, and is described as “definitely one of the World’s great banknote rarities.”The blue and pale tan-orange issue with a red serial number has the standard face design of a dhow on the left and farmers harvesting cloves on the right. It is perforated with the world CANCELLED. The back is blank. Spink said that it is likely that about 100 years ago it was backed on paper, which became brittle with age.
The estimated selling price was 40,000 to 60,000 GBP but it brought the sum of 90,000 GBP making it a record-breaking auction of a banknote.
