Dom Carlos-I was the king of Portugal; he was the first Portuguese king to die a violent death since Sebastian in 1578. He was the diplomat and martyr king of Portugal from 1889 until his assassination in 1908.

Carlos-I was born in Lisbon, Portugal, to King Luis and Queen Maria Pia, daughter of King Victor Emmanuel II of Italy, and was a member of the House of Braganza.

Carlos-I sat on the throne of Portugal in 1889 and ruled it until 1908. As a king, Carlos I; was an intelligent but extravagant man. After sitting on the throne, he signed treaties with the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. During his reign, Portugal was declared bankrupt two times, one in 1892 and again in 1902. The bankruptcy had disturbed Portugal, causing industrial disturbances, socialist and republican antagonism, and criticism of the monarchy; from the press.
