Swiss Coins Commemorating the City of Bern

The city of Bern, Switzerland is proud of its symbol, the bear. According to the legend, in 1191 the Duke of Zahringen founded the city of Bern and vowed to name it after the first animal he met on a hunt and vowed to name it after the first animal he met on a hunt, which turned out to be a bear.

Since this trip is believed to have taken place in January, Berchtoldstag is celebrated on 2nd January which is mainly celebrated in the German-speaking cantons of Switzerland , such as Bern, Zürich, Zug and some others

The bear has been the animal on the seal and coat of arms of Bern from at least the 1220s. The coin shown above is the 5 Batzen coin issued in the year 1826. This Silver coin depicts Bear in crowned oval shield within sprigs on one side and Concordance cross within quatrelobe on the other side.
